Growth Potential Index (GPI)
Growth Potential Index (GPI)
GPI uses the fire perimeter in miles for the first hour of fire growth with no intervention of suppression resources and fire area growth from the area of a fire spread simulation two hours after simulation started divide by the fire size in the first hour as follows.
The different values of GPI vary from 1 (Low) to 5 (Extreme) as shown in the next table.
GPI Class | Description | |
1 | LOW | The fire has a very low potential due to its size and combination of potential growth in the next hour (if not contained) |
2 | MODERATE | The fire has a moderate potential due to its size and combination of potential growth in the next hour (if not contained) |
3 | ACTIVE | The fire has a high potential due to its size and combination of potential growth in the next hour (if not contained) |
4 | VERY ACTIVE | The fire has a very high potential due to its size and combination of potential growth in the next hour (if not contained) |
5 | EXTREME | The fire has an extreme potential due to its size and combination of potential growth in the next hour (if not contained). |
